Fans of Irish road bowling can get their fix Saturday all across the Ohio Valley. Two road bowling events are scheduled that day – the Wheeling Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians will hold its competition at Sonneborn Shelter near Wheeling Park High School, with check-in starting at 11 a.m., while the Knights of Columbus will hold its competition at St. Jude Park in Glen Dale, with check-in starting at 10 a.m.
In Irish road bowling, bowlers roll a small, heavy metal ball down a road course. The person or team that can reach the finish line in the fewest throws is named the winner. The sport has grown rapidly in West Virginia. There are 18 road bowling events scheduled in the Mountain State in 2025. The Wheeling event expects more than 100 teams and 1,000 bowlers.
