A series of town hall meetings and debates from a Birmingham grass-roots group was the topic of conversation and generated headlines during the latest city-wide election season.

But as some Birmingham voters prepare to return to the polls for runoffs, town hall organizers said they are being snubbed when it comes to returning to sit and debate with them.

William Muhammad, president of the Committee to Save Jefferson County, said his group will continue to hold its series of candidate forums for city council runoff races, even though, in several contests, only one of the two candidates have agreed to participate.

“It appears to be a strategy or plan for them not to come out,” Muhammad said.
