Pull out your lederhosen and beer steins because Abilene’s Oktoberfest is this weekend. Kicking off Friday through Saturday, this family-friendly event is free for everyone.

“I’m German, and I just wanted to bring my heritage to Abilene,” said Heidi Anderson, the event’s founder. “We’ve had a lot of compliments from German people that this is the most authentic Oktoberfest they’ve been to in Kansas.”

Abilene Oktoberfest features many German traditions in its two days. For example, stein hoisting competitions will occur Friday and Saturday and Saturday will feature the tapping of the keg and a hammerschlagen competition.

One of the recent additions is a live band stage in the middle of the festival. The festival will have three musical acts and a DJ for both days.
