OTTAWA—The Canadian government is banning Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap from entering the country, just weeks before the band was set to perform in Toronto and Vancouver, accusing the pro-Palestinian group of promoting political violence and supporting Hamas and Hezbollah.
It’s a rare show of force that comes the same day Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals are expected to table a new hate-crimes bill that bans the display of symbols of government-designated terror groups for the purpose of spreading hate.
“Advocating for political violence, glorifying terrorist organizations and displaying hate symbols that directly target the Jewish community are not protected forms of expression and will not be tolerated by our government,” said Vince Gasparro, the Eglinton—Lawrence MP and parliament
