MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - With Wisconsin’s deer hunting seasons underway, the Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters to get their harvests tested for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

The fatal neurological illness affects deer, elk, moose, caribou. Once present, it can remain in the environment for years, according to the DNR.

Deer infected with CWD may not look sick for months after exposure, but as the disease progresses, common symptoms can include:

Extreme weight loss

Drooping head and ears

Loss of coordination

Excessive drooling

Lack of fear of humans
