A Piscataway man and former Essex County Sheriff’s Officer has admitted his role in a bank fraud conspiracy, federal officials announced on Wednesday.

Ryan L. Terry, 32, pleaded guilty on Sept. 11 before U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas to one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and one count of bank fraud, according to Acting U.S. Attorney and Special Attorney Alina Habba.

Court records show that Terry, who was serving as a police officer with the Orange Police Department at the time, participated in a multi-person scheme that involved stealing checks from the mail, depositing them into controlled accounts, and withdrawing the money before banks or victims detected the fraud.
