CHEYENNE – Cheyenne Little Theatre Players is carrying the banner straight into the Mary Godfrey Playhouse this month with its latest musical production.

In “Newsies,” inspired by the 1899 New York City newsboys strike, the main character, Jack Kelly, brings his fellow newsboys together to protest against newspaper giant Joseph Pulitzer’s unfair price increase on newspapers.

The musical was originally a 1992 Disney film, but became a Broadway musical in 2012, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman.

Jessie Klein, CLTP director of “Newsies,” said while it covers the news strike that happened back in the late 1800s, the musical also explores themes like workers’ rights, unions, child labor, and the beginning of the civil rights and women’s suffrage movements.
