A Canada Post letter carrier in Sudbury charged with impaired driving will get to keep his driver’s licence.

In the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury, Markien Shevchik, 41, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act.

“It was a really big mistake on my part,” Shevchik told Justice Pierre Lambert-Belanger via Zoom link, just before being fined $2,000 and issued a 15-month probation order. “I really regret it. I learned a huge lesson.”

The Crown and defence lawyer Paul Frinak had suggested the penalties.

The probation order includes conditions that Shevchik complete the province’s Back on Track program and not drive with any alcohol in his system.

Shevchik did not have a prior record.
