An afternoon shooting in southwest Birmingham left one person dead.

West Precinct officers were dispatched about 12:45 p.m. Saturday to the neighborhood in the 700 block of McMillon Avenue.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said they arrived to find the victim bleeding on the ground behind an SUV in someone’s driveway.

The victim was rushed to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation indicates the shooting happened near where the victim was found. Investigators believe he was seeking help when he collapsed.

“Due to the neighborhood having great surveillance cameras, we already have an advantage in this incident,” he said. “Our detectives already have a lead because of great community members and their investment in surveillance cameras.”
