KALAMAZOO — At 6:54 p.m. on Saturday, the University of Toledo’s playoff hopes were dealt a cruel death.

The Rockets allowed Western Michigan to score the game-winning touchdown and 2-point conversion in the final minute, suffering a devastating 14-13 loss as a two-touchdown favorite.

“Obviously disappointed in the outcome of the game,” Toledo coach Jason Candle said. “Western made a couple plays in the end. We didn’t make them. Got tons of mistakes to fix on the videotape.”

Toledo led 13-0 until Western scored its first points in the final seconds of the third quarter. With 2:10 left in the game, UT turned the Broncos away at the Toledo 16-yard line on fourth down, seemingly securing a win in the Mid-American Conference opener for the 18th consecutive season.
