VOORHEESVILLE — For 20 years, Will Aubrey counted hawks, vultures and eagles each September as they traveled south for the winter. This year, he was counting people.
The Helderberg Escarpment Hawk Watch takes place in mid-September every year at the height of raptor migration to create a comprehensive count of birds of prey moving through the area. What began as a meeting of a few volunteers at Thacher State Park in Voorheesville has become a 1,500-person celebration, Aubrey estimated.
