BLOOMINGTON — The skies opened unexpectedly in the second half Saturday night, unloading a sheeting late-September rain across 56,000 delirious souls.

The damp, wet summer had in recent weeks given way to a dry meteorological fall, the grass only just beginning to brown for the first time all year. The last three days had been Bloomington’s hottest in weeks. The rain was finally welcome.
