Diane Martel, a prolific music video director who has been behind the timeless visuals for such artists as Mariah Carey , Justin Timberlake , Sting, and J ennifer Lopez , died Thursday after a battle with breast cancer. She was 63.
The director’s family released a statement to Rolling Stone confirming the her death.
“Diane passed away peacefully at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital—surrounded by friends and family—after a long battle with breast cancer,” the family said.
Diane Martel was born in New York City on May 7, 1962. After beginning her career as a street artist and creating dance-focused documentaries funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the director directed her first music video, for Onyx’s “ Throw Ya Gunz ” (1992).
