1925: Countess Martha Wentworth Martiana Berteling, formerly of Flagstaff and now of Los Angeles, was recalled to the memory of Flagstaff people on Wednesday by Charles Netherson, a young English commercial traveler who lately became acquainted with the countess, who recently had given him a check for $11 for money he loaned her, which check was returned by the Pacific Southwest bank of Los Angeles, marked “account closed.” Mr. Netherson said the countess told him she had an immense ranch near Flagstaff on which she expects to realize great profits and that she tried within a half hour of meeting him to get him to invest $2,000 in the ranch for bean raising.
