Canutillo gave Del Valle all it could handle Friday night in the District 1-5A, Division 2 showdown between two of El Paso's top teams.

But Del Valle survived, 21-16, to remain unbeaten this season. The two teams waited through a near two-hour lightning delay, which started with 9:30 left in the fourth quarter. The Conquistadores never trailed and led 14-3 at halftime. A key fumble recovery in the first half by Del Valle played a huge role in the team's 11-point lead at the break as it put a stop to a Canutillo drive deep into Del Valle territory.

Canutillo got the ball when play resumed with 9:30 left in the game and drove from its own 20 to the Del Valle 27, but the Conquistadores defense stiffened and stopped the Eagles with 1:43 left on downs to secure the win.
