It was so heartwarming to read the beautiful article about Roseline Vakkai and her efforts to serve the needs of other women like herself, (“ Portland refugee farm transforms vacant lot into healing community, ” Sept. 14).

We have so much to learn from Vakkai and others like her. It seems we have become so far removed from the simple ways of living and serving. Her organizing, sustainable farming, and community-building skills are to be admired and emulated.

I would like to thank her and those like her for their courage and commitment. Her mission, values and intention may be the only way left to save ourselves and our world. May they remain safe and flourish.
