CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Chattanooga Police Department announced Wednesday that K9 Diesel, a German Shepherd, was killed in the line of duty due to complications from injuries sustained while executing a security sweep during a SWAT operation.

Diesel underwent emergency surgery on the night of Sept. 15, but his injuries would leave him with a severely diminished quality of life, according to CPD. After consulting with vets, CPD decided to have Diesel humanely euthanized.

“We are all aware of the inherent risk in policing and that includes for our K9 partners too.
