SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The injury hits keep coming for the Arizona Cardinals .

Running back James Conner was carted off the field with an ankle injury early in the third quarter of their Week 3 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He was quickly ruled out by the team.

The injury occurred on Conner’s second carry of the third quarter, as he was tackled near the line of scrimmage by Jordan Elliott and Marques Sigle. His right leg appeared to bend the wrong way under the weight of the tackle.

After the game, head coach Jonathan Gannon said he did not know the severity of Conner’s injury. Backup running back Trey Benson provided more transparency.

“I'm gonna do it for him,” Benson said. “He's gonna be my motivation for the rest of the year.” Looking for a free mini puzzle? Play the USA TODAY
