A beloved family pet has melted hearts with its response to being rescued from a house fire.

Police officers kicked down a door before rushing into the burning property in Aurora, a US city in northeastern Illinois, on September 11.

Amid heavy smoke and blaring fire alarms, Aurora Illinois Police Department investigators Michael Ely and Jacob Leonard carried out a sweep to make sure nobody was home.

In one room blocked off by a pet gate was the family dog, an American Staffordshire Terrier called Oakley.

“Hey buddy, come on,” Ely said.

The officer reached for Oakley’s collar to guide him away from danger, but the dog took off down the hall to a mat placed in front of his leash.
