BURLINGTON, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) - Investigations are underway in Burlington after on person was shot during a "prolonged encounter" Sunday, Vermont State Police report.

Burlington officers responded to a Riverside Avenue disturbance at 7:30 a.m., which then became a situation that went into the evening. State police say that the subject is in custody and "receiving medical care for sustained injuries."

VSP's Major Crime Unit is investigating the circumstances of the shooting. Additionally, the location where this incident occurred is also being processed.

The Burlington officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, and their identity will be released after 24 hours.Once investigations conclude, the case will be given to the Vermont AG Office "and the relevant State’s Attorney’
