WESTBROOK, Conn. (WTNH) — An animal rescue shelter in Westbrook says it is having trouble keeping up with the number of people abandoning or surrendering their pets.

When you walk into Army's Legacy in Westbrook, you're met by the barks, the eager eyes and the wagging tails: signs of dogs begging for a second chance.

"They're stressed, they're vomiting, they're not eating," Vice President Rebekah DeMatteo said. "They don't know why this happened to them. All they have is that one person and that family that was supposed to be there for them and they're dumped without any knowledge of why."

The rescue organization's president, who is also a New Haven animal control officer, says several of their four-legged companions were surrendered. Others have been abandoned or abused.
