HIGH POINT, N.C. — A 13-year-old student was taken into custody Monday morning after school security staff discovered an unloaded gun in his backpack at Ferndale Middle School, according to High Point police.

Police said the school’s weapons detection scanner alerted staff around 8:20 a.m. as the student entered the building. Staff secured the boy and found an unloaded 9mm handgun inside his backpack.

Officers emphasized that the student never displayed the gun and did not make any verbal threats.

The teen faces multiple charges, including felony possession of a stolen firearm, felony possession of a firearm on educational property, possession of a concealed weapon, and possession of a firearm by a minor.
