MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (KCRG) - The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has confirmed another death linked to Legionnaires’ disease on Monday.

The HHS reported that an elderly adult with multiple underlying health conditions died on September 18. The death has been linked to the Legionella outbreak.

State officials reported an increase in Legionnaires’ disease cases from 70 on Friday to 71 on Monday. There have been two confirmed deaths so far.

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services first reported on the illness in the region on September 4. The first reported death was a retired Catholic priest who died on August 29.

The source of this outbreak is still unclear, although state and local leaders suspect a cooling tower in the community.
