CLEVELAND, Ohio — A federal vaccine advisory panel unanimously voted Friday to change recommendations for who should get vaccinated for COVID-19, saying Americans six months and older should discuss the risks and benefits with their health care providers.

The move walks back the previous recommendation from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices that all Americans 6 months and older get an annual COVID-19 shot.

Panel members also decided not to suggest that states require a prescription for the COVID-19 vaccine, according to press reports.

Health policy and public health experts said the full implications of the recommendation, made at a two-day meeting last week, were unclear.
