Australia’s Home Affairs Department is facing serious questions about why it allowed an accused child rapist to leave the country before he was due to stand trial.
Arvind Ajay Singh, a Fijian national, was charged with one count of rape of a four-year-old girl he was caring for at a Queensland childcare centre in 2022.
The 39-year-old was committed to stand trial in April 2023 at Maroochydore District Court on the Sunshine Coast, but the case was beset with delays and a March 2024 trial date was delisted.
Singh, who was free on bail, was located by Australian Border Force in May this year and placed in detention before being allowed to leave Australia in July.
