KANSAS CITY, Mo. —
The Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department is beginning a new program aimed at deterring crime.
Starting Tuesday, KCPD officers will have a steady blue light on top of their vehicles to increase visibility. Advertisement
The nonflashing blue lights do not signal an emergency, so drivers do not need to stop or pull over when they see them.
Police will still use red and blue flashing lights with sirens to signal emergencies or traffic stops.
Highlighting police presence will be especially useful in entertainment districts and high-traffic areas, police say.
Along with deterring crime, police hope the lights allow people to find them more easily in emergency situations.
