LILBURN, Ga. — The City of Lilburn is celebrating National Roundabout Week properly.
Hood Road and Lilburn School Road have a new layout, highlighted by a brand-new roundabout just off of Lawrenceville Highway. City and county officials cut the ribbon on the traffic circle on Tuesday morning, citing safety and improved traffic flow as the primary reasons behind the $4.3 million project.
"We have 40 buses coming through this intersection every day," Lilburn Mayor Johnny Crist told 11Alive. "[Safety] has always been a concern."
Crist said the project eliminated three small entrances on the west side of busy Lawrenceville Highway. There is now just one, and it has a new traffic light, activated just three months ago, that makes that intersection with Hood Road safer.
