BISMARCK — After a veto snafu nearly resulted in the loss of $35 million for affordable housing, North Dakota lawmakers are working to establish a date in state law to address vetoes handed down after the legislative session adjourns.

Reexamining the process and authority surrounding a governor's veto began when Gov. Kelly Armstrong's office accidentally stamped a big, red "X" on an entire section of a budget bill instead of crossing out a single sentence.

The targeted line-item was $150,000 included in the North Dakota Housing Finance Agency's budget that would have funded a tribal homelessness liaison, and the overall section was $35 million for affordable housing initiatives.
