Two people were found dead following an apartment fire in Portland, Maine, early on Sunday morning, according to officials.

Around 2:17 a.m., Portland firefighters responded to a fire at 43 St. Lawrence St., a three-story apartment building with four units, according to a statement released by the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy flames on the rear porch of the building and worked to suppress the fire and evacuate the building, according to the statement. All units in the apartment were occupied when the fire broke out.

Two people were found dead inside the home, according to the statement. Both were transported to Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, Maine, to determine a cause of death, officials said. Their identities have not been rel
