NORFOLK, Va. — One year after a historic merger between Old Dominion University and Eastern Virginia Medical School, leaders said the move is already reshaping healthcare across Hampton Roads.

The integration officially took effect July 1, 2024, creating the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University , now the largest academic health sciences center in Virginia, according to the university.

ODU President and CEO Dr. Brian Hemphill said the effort was decades in the making.

"This is something that this community has talked about for over 20 years," Dr. Hemphill said. "This was a bold move and something that this community needed and desired."
