HOUSTON (KIAH) – City leaders are pushing back against growing fears after five bodies were pulled from Houston’s bayous in recent days, bringing the total to 14 discovered in several bayous this year, down from 24 in the previous year.

Mayor John Whitmire said over the past few days on social media, he has seen the rumor of a serial killer in the city and wanted to stop the fear in its tracks.

At a press conference Tuesday, Mayor John Whitmire addressed public speculation head-on. “Enough is enough of the wild speculation,” Whitmire said, stressing there is “absolutely no evidence of a serial killer,” said Whitmire. He added that even a single death is too many, but pointed to factors like homelessness, alcohol, and mental illness as possible contributors in some of the cases.
