SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - The St. Joseph County Jail has been put on lockdown after an inmate experienced a drug overdose over the weekend.

According to St. Joseph County police, fellow inmates alerted staff to the medical emergency on Saturday around 6 p.m.

Police say the inmate, a 46-year-old man, was conscious and alert when he was taken to the hospital.

“We take the safety and security of our facility seriously,” says St. Joseph County Sheriff Bill Redman. “Drugs have no place in our jail, and we will thoroughly investigate how this incident occurred so we can continue strengthening our efforts to keep them out.”

Police say the jail will remain on lockdown until the investigation into the inmate’s drug overdose is complete.
