PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Since 2017, Portland has been a sanctuary city. But as federal immigration efforts ramp up and agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement are taking more people into custody, the Portland City Council is reviewing a series of new ordinances to strengthen its sanctuary city status.
The City Council's Community and Public Safety Committee introduced several ordinances Tuesday that are now currently under review. Several were put together with help from Latinx, a city employee group. The push is to turn the 2017 city resolution into binding city law.
"Do not wait until more people are kidnapped on our streets, or worse, killed as we have seen in some other counties across the US," said Anamaria Perez with Latinx PDX. "There is a lack of clarity on what a sanctu
