MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will start the removal process of paper tax refund checks for individual taxpayers, according to the IRS.
The option for paper tax refund checks for individual taxpayers will be phased out beginning on September 30, the IRS said. This is the agency's effort to transition to electronic payments.
The IRS will release detailed guidance for 2025 tax returns before the 2026 filing period starts. According to the IRS, taxpayers can continue to use existing forms and procedures until further notice. This includes individuals who are filing 2024 returns on extension of a due date prior to December 31, the IRS said.
