Last week US President Donald Trump signed a sweeping presidential proclamation on H-1B visa applications. Under the new order, companies are now required to pay a one-time fee of $100,000 (around Rs 88 lakh) on every new H-1B visa application. The order came as a shock to the tech industry in particular, where giants like Google, Microsoft, Meta and countless startups rely on pulling talent from across the globe. A large number of these talented software engineers, almost 70 per cent, who use H-1B visa to get into the US tech industry are Indians, and there are fairly overt signs that Trump targeted Indians with his executive order.
