GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. (WILX) - The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has confirmed Genesee County’s first case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in a wild deer.
The diagnosis was verified by the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, which partners with the DNR to monitor CWD in the state’s wild deer population.
The sample will now be sent to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, for secondary confirmation.
CWD is a fatal neurological disease that affects white-tailed deer, elk, and moose. It is a chronic, slow-progressing illness that spreads gradually through affected areas.
