DETROIT, Mich. (WILX) - On this day in Detroit on 1830, the last execution performed by the territory of Michigan was held in Detroit.
The public event was so disturbing to spectators that it fueled support for ending capital punishment.
Just 13 years later, Michigan became the first state to ban the death penalty. The death penalty is still banned to this day in the state constitution.
