NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — New vape shops in Newport News will be subject to new regulations after the City Council approved an amendment to the zoning ordinance on Tuesday.
“This ordinance is about protecting our children and families, not punishing responsible businesses,” Mayor Phillip Jones stated in a press release about the decision. “We have heard the concerns of our residents, and this action ensures that new vape shops will meet strong community-driven standards.”
The process to amend the ordinance to regulate vape shops has been ongoing for months, with public input and recommendations from the Planning Commission.
The new ordinance defines a vape shop as any business at which 20% or more of the retail inventory, display space, or sales revenue pertains to electronic cigarettes, va
