Victorian crime rates have continued to soar to record levels despite the Allan government’s bail reforms taking effect in March.

Crime statistics released on Thursday showed the number of criminal incidents surged to 483,583 in the 12 months ending on June 30, an increase of 18.3 per cent on the previous year.

This increase far exceeded population growth, with the rate of criminal incidents per 100,000 people climbing by 16.3 per cent to 6,814 – the highest rate in at least a decade.

The total number of criminal offences committed across the state also increased in the 12 months to June reaching 638,640, with the 15.7 per cent increase seeing the population-adjusted crime rate surpass the previous high recorded in 2016.
