SEWARD — Two people were hospitalized Wednesday night after being attacked by a brown bear near Exit Glacier Trail in Seward, the latest in a string of serious bear encounters across Southcentral Alaska this year.
Alaska State Troopers said they were notified around 9:11 p.m. by a local hospital that both victims had been admitted with non-life-threatening injuries. According to troopers, the pair fought off the bear before making it out of the area.
The attack happened about a quarter mile up the popular Exit Glacier Trail. The National Park Service has since closed the trail until further notice. Troopers and biologists are expected to assess the area Thursday morning, and officials are urging the public to avoid the trail until it is reopened.
