LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- Michigan officials say the legislature has reached an agreement to pass a budget by Oct. 1 and avoid a potential government shutdown -- a budget they say will be smaller than last year's.

According to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, lawmakers plan to pass the School Aid budget and state budget, addressing "top priorities" for both Democrats and Republicans, including school and road funding for the next few years.

At a press conference Thursday, House Speaker Matt Hall confirmed that lawmakers have agreed on a "framework" of a deal.

That deal includes allocating $1.5 billion for the state's roads that will rise to $1.8 billion over the next five years.

Additionally, lawmakers have agreed on a 24% wholesale tax on marijuana for road funding.
