A massive fire erupted at a storage facility in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on Friday afternoon, with flames so intense they spread to a neighbouring street and torched multiple cars.
The incident unfolded in the industrial hub of Matraville, at the corner of Botany Road and Bumborah Point Road, when the paper storage site - Opal Paper Mill - went up in flames.
Embers carried by strong south-westerly winds ignited vehicles in a nearby car park, leaving at least seven cars burnt out before firefighters managed to extinguish them.
Superintendent Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed the situation quickly escalated, saying it had been declared a "six-alarm fire".
He said 25 firetrucks and over 80 firefighters were dispatched to the scene.
