COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSPA) - The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) has confirmed a case of measles in an Upstate resident, marking the fourth confirmed case of measles in South Carolina since July.
Officials said the person was unvaccinated and did not have immunity from a previous measles infection. The individual reportedly did not have any known exposure to someone with measles, and was placed in isolation to contain the virus.
Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, red eyes and runny nose, followed by a rash on the face then spreading to the rest of the body. The rash usually lasts five or six days. The virus can spread through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes.
