WORCESTER, Mass. —
Kia and Hyundai owners in Worcester are asked to take added precautions following a series of car thefts.
Worcester police say since July, there have been ten reported car thefts involving the two car models — eight involving Kia vehicles and two involving Hyundai vehicles.
According to investigators, the thefts occurred during the overnight or early morning hours, with a recent cluster occurring in the area of Main and Elm Street.
Police say the thieves exploit a security vulnerability specific to Kia and Hyundai models, which allows them to bypass the ignition system and steal the vehicle.
In most cases, investigators say the suspects enter the unlocked vehicle or break a window, then begin tampering with the steering column or ignition.
