Red Rocks State Historic Site will continue its 20th anniversary celebration Sunday with a program highlighting Ruth Garver Gagliardo, the former Emporia Gazette staffer who helped launch the William Allen White Children’s Book Award.

The program, Ruth Garver Gagliardo Remembers William Allen White , will be presented at 2 p.m. Sunday in the visitor center at 927 Exchange St. Robbie Hill, retired educator and longtime Emporia resident, will lead the presentation.

Gagliardo began her career at the Gazette, where she persuaded Editor William Allen White to publish a regular column on children’s books. The Gazette became the first American newspaper to consistently review children’s literature. She went on to become a nationally recognized advocate for libraries and children’s reading.
