LOS ANGELES – “One Battle After Another” opened with $22.4 million this weekend to lead all films in North America, according to industry estimates released Sunday.

Writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film is loosely based on Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel “Vineland,” and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Chase Infiniti, Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn.

DreamWorks’ “Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie” opened in second place with $13.7 million, Comscore reported.

“Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — the Movie Infinity Castle” grossed $7.1 million Friday through Sunday in its third weekend in theaters in the United States and Canada.

“The Conjuring: Last Rites” was fourth with $6.86 million in its fourth weekend, followed by “The Strangers: Chapter 2,” which opened with $5.9 million.
