The Supreme Court on Monday reprimanded the Patna High Court for its decision to grant anticipatory bail to murder accused. The Court said that while it is important to protect individual liberty, courts cannot ignore the suffering of victims.

The Supreme Court made these observations while quashing the Patna High Court's March 2024 order, which had granted anticipatory bail to two accused in the murder of a woman.

A bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta said - The High Court made this decision very hastily and granted bail without hearing the complainant. The Court did not consider it correct.

The Supreme Court ordered the accused to surrender within four weeks. Thereafter, they may apply for regular bail if they wish.
