A popular Spring Lake Heights ice cream shop was temporarily closed Saturday evening after an SUV crashed into its building.

Hoffman’s Ice Cream, a summer staple since the 1980s, reopened on Sunday morning after the building was deemed safe, the management announced on Facebook.

Spring Lake Heights police Chief Edward Gunnell said the crash occurred at 5:24 p.m. after a 79-year-old driver pulled into the parking lot and thought he had placed the vehicle in park.

“Luckily, there were no injuries to the driver or staff,” Gunnell said. “At a usually busy time of day, thankfully, there were no patrons in the building.”

Hoffman’s location in Point Pleasant remained open.
