The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation has secured two new parcels of land at the New Market Battlefield, preserving ground that witnessed the opening clashes of one of the Valley’s most storied Civil War battles.

The acquisition protects 6.8 acres tied to the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864. One parcel on the north slope of Shirley’s Hill was where Confederate Gen. Gabriel Wharton launched his attack and the Virginia Military Institute Corps of Cadets suffered their first casualties. The second, located along the Valley Pike north of town, was the scene of a fierce charge by the 62nd and 22nd Virginia Infantry regiments against Union defenders at the Rice House.
