PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - Peoria fire crews tackled flames involving hazardous materials that broke out inside a business Monday morning.

According to Battalion Chief Steve Rada, the fire broke out around 11:15 a.m. Monday inside the Alcast Company foundry on North University Street. When firefighters arrived, they found some molten aluminum, as well as part of a machine, that was on fire.

Firefighters used chemical extinguishers to put out the flames. Rada said that this fire was distinct from a typical fire due to the material that ignited.

“The difference between this fire and a normal structure fire with wood is that you can put water on wood,” Rada said. “You can’t put anything on this type of material unless it is a smoldering type material you would have to use.”
